Q. What is Dampp Chaser Humidifier Pad Treatment?

A. Dampp Chaser Humidifier Pad Treatment is a treatment designed to be added to the water added to your Piano Life Saver System. Adding this treatment helps increase the life of the humidifier pads and minimize bacterial and algae growth, along with other biological growth, in the humidifier and watering tube.

Q. What is a Piano Life Saver System? Why do you have to water a piano?

A. A Piano Life Saver System is a humidity control system that can be installed onto your piano. Humidity fluctuations in a piano's environment can cause the wood to expand and contract, causing the instrument to become out of tune and sometimes damaging parts. The Piano Life Saver System will help mitigate the fluctuations by adding or removing humidity as needed, helping the piano stay at around 45% humidity.

Q. How do you use a Dampp Chaser?

A. When the WATER light blinks on your Piano Life Saver System, fill the watering can up to the red line with water and add one capful of Pad Treatment to the water. Then, carefully pour the water into the watering tube to fill the humidifier.

Q. Is Dampp Chaser necessary?

Dampp Chaser Pad Treatment helps your humidifier pads last longer, keeps biological growth out of the humidifier, and helps your humidifier work more effectively. In environments where there are greater fluctuations in humidity, this treatment will help your humidifier notify you of when it does or does not need water more accurately. This helps you better protect your piano from possible damage.

Q. Can you use other treatments for a Piano Life Saver System?

A. No. You never want to add any other treatments to the water since they are not intended for use in a piano. Other brands of water treatment contain acids which corrode strings and metal parts in the piano. Only use Dampp Chaser Humidifier Pad Treatment in your humidifier.

Q. How do you purchase Dampp Chaser Humidifier Pad Treatment?

Our Baldwin grand piano lives with us in rural Quebec. Humidity control local to the piano is critical to maintaining the piano in tune. Using the Treatment activates the “Feed Me!” Flashing Light very effectively. This greatly simplifies our maintenance task, and avoids under-watering in the dryness of winter, and over-watering in the dampness of summer. I’d like to pass on one trick: First fill the watering can with water up to the marker line, then Second add the capful of Treatment. Third, leave the solution for a couple of hours to diffuse. This trick prevents the solution from generating bubbles; otherwise the bubbles make transferring the solution from the watering can to the piano pad somewhat difficult.  -Simon H.

I usually purchase from our piano tuner. Much cheaper through Howard Piano Industries--even with shipping costs. Great products!  -Virginia E.

We use this stuff for the piano and in the winter in our portable dehumidifiers. The filters last many many weeks without turning moldy mildewy. Just a cap full every 3-5 gallons is suffices.  -Michael M.
